Course Description:
Explores Nietzsche's philosophical reflections on literature as well as Hesse's
and Mann's literary thematization of Nietzsche's philosophy. Special emphasis placed
on the changing conception of character from a literary, philosophical and psychological
perspective, including the role of myth in that changing conception; on music and
language; and on Nietzsche's cultural and moral critique and its reevaluation by Hesse
and Mann in light of the political crises of their time.
